Physical Activity Effects on Depression


What is Depression?

 

Depression is the feeling of deep despair and hopelessness. It is also the number one cause of disability in the United States and 1 out of 5 people will experience it in their lifetime. It differs from the common, short spurts of feeling blue, and is more of a long term sadness that effects your ability to maintain a normal, healthy life.



 

 What are the symptoms?

 

  • ·      Feelings of worthlessness and helplessness
  • ·      Loss of interest in daily activities
  • ·      Insomnia
  • ·      Fatigue
  • ·      Appetite changes
  • ·      Problems concentrating
  • ·      Anger or irritability

How can physical activity help?

 

Physical activity can be a great treatment for minor cases of depression and a good complimentary treatment for more severe cases. Exercise increases the amount of endorphins in the brain, giving the body a natural state of happiness and improving self-esteem.


 

What types of physical activity can I do?

  • ·      Walking, jogging, running, etc.
  • ·      Bicycling 
  • ·      Yoga
  • ·      Weight lifting
  • ·      Zumba
  • ·      Sports
  • ·      Anything that gets you moving!
